Experiencing the Dolomites
Between mountains and culture
Deciding to spend your holidays in Kiens in Val Pusteria, you are in the perfect starting point for mountain hikes, adventures in nature, and different cultural activities. You can discover the surroundings with their UNESCO World Heritage sites by car or public transport. What are you waiting for? Come visit us! Your adventure in South Tyrol awaits you!
Culture and history
Culture lovers have a hard time choosing between all the interesting sites: You can visit one of the charming towns nearby, such as Bruneck or Brixen, just a 10 and 30 minutes’ drive away, or spend a day exploring one of the museums in the surrounding area and discovering more about South Tyrolean culture. Our favorite museums are:
The South Tyrolean folklore museum in Dietenheim (15 minutes by car): An open-air museum with farms, huts, and sheds, where you can get to know old handicrafts and find out more about animals and gardens. An unforgettable day for young and old!
Neustift Abbey in Vahrn (20 minutes by car): One of South Tyrol’s most important monastic complexes, founded in 1142 and still home to Augustinian canons today. The complex is renowned for its beautiful Baroque church, historic cloister and impressive library. It is also home to a renowned winery, where you can taste high-quality wines directly at the abbey’s winery.
The Loden museum in Vintl (10 minutes by car): Here, you can discover the history and production of loden interactively. This high-quality fabric was traditionally used to protect people from the bitterly cold winters in the mountains.
Take a guided tour of Taufers Castle or Rodeneck Castle, both just a 30-minutes’ drive away, and discover what life was like for medieval nobility in South Tyrol.
Adventures in nature
Val Pusteria is known because of the Dolomites. In summer, there are countless possibilities for hikes in our surroundings. There are also multiple lakes for quick refreshment, waterfalls, and different nature attractions in the UNESCO World Heritage of the Dolomites. Our tips for unforgettable days outdoors:
For a mix of water and hiking, you should visit Lake Antholzersee (40 minutes by car) and hike around the lake, or the Reinbach Waterfalls (30 minutes by car). If you want to spend a relaxed day at a swimming lake, you should visit Lake Issinger Weiher (5 minutes by car). In 45 minutes, you can reach the famous Lake Braies with its stunning mountain views. We advise you to go there early in the morning or in the evening, though, because it gets very crowded during the day.
For an unforgettable day in the mountains, you have plenty of choice. The most famous hike is, without any doubt, the hike around the Three Peaks. You can reach the starting point of the hike by taking the shuttle bus in Toblach (35 minutes by car) and look forward to an unforgettable day with unique panoramic views.
A wonderful day awaits you also at Kronplatz/Plan de Corones. In only 20 minutes, you will reach the valley station in Reischach and from there, the cable car will take you up to the mountain top. You will be surprised by breathtaking Dolomitic views, a big choice of hikes and two museums on the peak: the famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner’s Messner Mountain Museum and the museum of photography Lumen.
The Earth Pyramids of Percha (20 minutes by car) are a unique natural spectacle, which was formed over thousands of years due to erosion. An easy hiking trail takes you to the pyramids and offers a stunning view of Val Pusteria. The perfect destination for hiking lovers and nature fans.
In the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park, just a 35-minutes’ drive away, you’ll find alpine meadows, crystal-clear lakes, impressive rock faces and a wide variety of hiking trails for every level of difficulty. An excellent destination for anyone who loves spending time in unspoilt nature and enjoying breathtaking panoramic views.
Winter in Kiens
During the cold season, Kiens and its surroundings have a lot to offer for holidays filled with activities and unforgettable experiences. Between slopes, frozen lakes, and magical Christmas markets, you will certainly have wonderful winter holidays. Here are our tips for winter activities in our surroundings:
For winter adventures, you can choose between different skiing areas in our surroundings. The Kronplatz/Plan de Corones (20 minutes by car), is one of the most famous skiing areas and offers perfectly prepared slopes, modern lifts, and breathtaking views of the Dolomites. Gitschberg Jochtal (20 minutes by car), with its sunny slopes, inviting huts, and relaxing atmosphere, is perfect for families and skiers of every level. The 3 Peaks skiing area (approx. 1 hour by car) surprises with a unique atmosphere surrounded by majestic peaks with panoramic slopes and unforgettable landscapes. Speikboden (35 minutes by car) is a great destination for everybody looking for a variety of slopes, beautiful views, and a calm atmosphere, ideal for families.
During Christmas time, you should definitely visit one of the traditional Christmas markets. The nearest and most beautiful are the ones in Bruneck (10 minutes by car), Brixen (20 minutes by car), Klausen (30 minutes by car), Sterzing (35 minutes by car) and Bozen (50 minutes by car). Immerse yourself in the magical atmosphere of Christmas in the mountains.
Hikes in the snow are something beautiful. In our surroundings, you have different possibilities for walks in the winter landscape, surrounded by forests and mountains. A winter visit to Lake Braies (45 minutes by car) is always a good idea. Normally, during winter you’ll find the lake less crowded than in summer. Stunning winter hikes with or without snowshoes await you also in the Fanes Sennes Prags Nature Park (45 minutes by car) or Plätzwiese (approx. 1 hour by car) with an unforgettable panoramic view of the Dolomites.
